Mozambique: Mining giant prepares $6.5m for social schemes

Brazilian mining giant, Vale plans to invest $6.5 million for social projects in Mozambique by the end of this year benefiting more than 16,000 people in the coal-rich district of Moatize in the western province of Tete, the company said on Tuesday.Vale Mozambique currently employs more than 11,000 workers in its Moatize coal mining complex in Tete of which 93 percent are local while the remainder is foreign expatriate labor force.


“We continue with a strong commitment to the social component. Today at least 138 suppliers of products are local, equivalent to 90 percent of total suppliers. Our aim is to broaden this base’ said company spokesperson, Delmira Petersburg in a statement to APA on Tuesday.

She said Vale has also invested more than $2 million in the construction of new infrastructures in Moatize and Nampula.

“We built three pre-shaped classrooms, rehabilitated the Nacala-a-velha Health Center, and provided various hospital equipment,” said Delmira Petersburg.

Already in the context of environmental recovery, that Brazilian mining company says it is producing 60,000 seedlings to recover part of the mangrove in Nacala.

In Moatize, Vale’s project involves the distribution of approximately six thousand native tree shrubs, shade and fruit trees to the communities.

VALE, the world’s top iron ore producer is pouring billions of dollars in its Mozambique Moatize coal mine, which suffered extensive damage during the country’s civil war in the 1970s and 1980s.

Tete province is believed to hold about 2.4 million tonnes of coal reserves, making it one of the largest untapped deposits in the southern hemisphere.
