From Hops to Grapes
A Beer Drinker’s Transition into the World of Wine
As the sun beckons with the arrival of warmer days, there is nothing quite like cracking open a chilled bottle of beer on a hot summer’s evening. But there are devoted beer enthusiasts who want to venture from IPA variations and stout flavors to explore the world of wine.
White wines serve as the ultimate gateway from beer, best enjoyed at leisurely picnics or on balmy evenings spent on breezy terraces. The mere mention of Chardonnay evokes visions of relaxation and indulgence, making it the perfect companion for embracing the joys of summer. Here are 5 crisp and refreshing selections of white wine to start the summer:
#1 – Chateau Montelena 2021 Chardonnay, Napa Valley, California
The Chardonnay produced by Chateau Montelena had a significant impact on the Napa Valley. The 1976 event known as the '76 Judgment of Paris was a historic blind wine tasting held in Paris, and it showcased the rivalry between top French wines and unknown California wines. Organized by British wine merchant Steven Spurrier, the competition was designed to highlight the excellence of French wines. However, to everyone's surprise, the Californian wines emerged as winners in both the red and white wine categories.
In the white wine category, the Chateau Montelena Chardonnay stood out from the rest. Produced by Chateau Montelena in Calistoga, this Chardonnay surpassed renowned French white Burgundies, even surpassing those from esteemed wineries like Mersault and Puligny-Montrachet. The victory of the Chateau Montelena Chardonnay garnered international attention and recognition, shining a spotlight on the exceptional quality and potential of California wines.
Winemaker Matt Crafton led the charge for the 2021 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay -- an exceptional wine that highlights the essence of Napa Valley. It pours a brilliant golden hue in the glass, and on the nose, there is an abundance of ripe apple, white peach, citrus, and honeysuckle notes. There is also a delicate hint of lemon balm and mint, adding depth and complexity to the bouquet.
On the palate, a balance between richness and freshness mirrors the aromas, with juicy apple and white peach taking the forefront, complemented by zesty lemon and a touch of pear and tropical fruit. The mouthfeel is silky smooth, with a subtle layer of vanilla and spice. The finish is long and lingering, leaving a refreshing acidity. Bottle price: $75
#2 – Adega de Ponte da Barca, 2018 Reserva de Sócios Loureiro, Portugal
During a Vinhos Verdes Masterclass held at Ocean Prime in the Seaport neighborhood of Boston, this wine journalist became smitten with the taste of wine made with Loureiro grapes, popular in Vinho Verde wines. Although its translation is “green wine,” the Vinho Verde region of Portugal is about white wines. And for this wine it was the honeysuckle aroma that lured me to rank it as my favorite sip during the event, or the fact that it pairs so nicely with shellfish and vegetarian dishes. On the palate, ripe green apple, minerality (flint), and buttery texture, the latter thanks to battonage and a touch of oak aging. Bottle price: $14.44 through
#3 – Palmaz Vineyards 2020 Amalia Chardonnay, Napa Valley, California
Palmaz Vineyards, known for their exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, has expanded their portfolio by developing some delightful white wines. The impetus for this venture came from the women of the Palmaz family who championed the change. Aptly named after Amelia Palmaz, the esteemed matriarch, this Chardonnay is a barrel-fermented white wine that offers a refreshing and crisp taste, with prominent notes of zesty lemon curd. Its harmonious composition mirrors the balance and unity cherished by the Palmaz family. A perfect accompaniment to a lobster roll and chips, this Chardonnay guarantees a memorable gastronomic experience. Bottle price: $80
#4 – Chateau Beaubois 2023 Confidence, France
First, this is an organic wine from grapes harvested from a biodynamic vineyard in Costières de Nîmes in the south of the Rhône Valley. Second, it exudes elegance and sophistication from the moment it’s poured into the glass. Third, it’s crafted from the esteemed Grenache Blanc grape varietal, with a tiny bit of Viognier and Roussanne to add complexity (although I’d prefer to eliminate the Viognier in the blend). In appearance, the wine presents a radiant golden hue, hinting at the depth of flavor to follow. Upon the first swirl, enticing aromas dance from the glass, revealing notes of ripe peach, honeydew melon, and subtle hints of citrus blossom. A delicate bouquet of white flowers adds an ethereal quality, evoking a sense of springtime in the vineyards.
On the palate, Chateau Beaubois 2023 Confidence captivates with its harmonious balance and precise structure. The luscious flavors of juicy pear and tropical pineapple intertwine seamlessly, complemented by a refreshing acidity and layers of complexity that unfold with each sip. A hint of almond and a touch of minerality add depth and intrigue. Whether enjoyed on its own or paired with delicate seafood dishes or creamy cheeses, the 2023 Confidence will leave an impression. Bottle price: $14
#5 – Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée Brut Champagne, France
I recently had the pleasure of trying this Laurent-Perrier Brut Champagne from France, and it was truly a delightful experience. It was a Friday night gathering of gal pals and we loved this dry white bubbly with cheese and crackers. Once the bottle was opened, a luxurious bouquet of fresh apple, pear, and citrus aromas intoxicated my senses. As I took my first sip, I was immediately captivated by the crisp and vibrant flavors on my palate. The blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier grapes created a harmonious balance of richness and freshness. The elegant fruity notes of green apple and citrus were enhanced by a lovely hint of toasted almond and brioche, adding a touch of complexity to the overall taste profile.
This Champagne was easy to drink – and drink we did! It may be perfect for toasting, but also versatile enough to pair with chips, crackers, and cheese – and to enjoy with good friends. Bottle price: $60 on Wine.com.
