Free kayak clinics will be offered on Lake Yankton along Missouri National Recreational River. The clinics, which start Wednesday, will run into August.

Lake Yankton is a manmade lake that was originally part of the main channel of the Missouri River on the border of Nebraska and South Dakota, near Yankton, South Dakota.

“These clinics are an introduction to kayaking and provide visitors an opportunity to learn basic paddling skills and safety information related to the water sport,” says park ranger Teresa Mentzer. “Kayaking is increasing in popularity, and the National Park Service wants people to learn to paddle safely.”

The clinics are being held on Wednesdays through July and midway into August. They will take place on Lake Yankton from 9 a.m. to noon east of the fishing pier, and are open to persons age 12 to adult with no prior paddling experience.

Kayaks, equipment, and personal floatation devices (PFDs) are provided. Bring sunscreen, water and protective clothing. Enrollment for the clinic is limited and reservations are required. Deadline for reservations is at noon the day prior to the clinic date.
