A dozen rosés to sip before summer ends

In a world full of endless options of pink sips to enjoy this summer, here’s a list of a dozen rosés that stand out among the rest.

#1 – Mourchon, Côtes du Rhône Villages ‘Séguret,’ 2020 Loubié

This exceptional rosé is a certified organic blend made from grenache and syrah grapes harvested from 40-year-old estate grown vines in the Southern Rhône Valley Village of Séguret, near Gigondas. It’s priced around $18 a bottle (screwcap) and is as easy and breezy tasting as summertime. Think honey soaked red fruits like fresh-picked raspberries and perfect acidity that lends itself to a vibrant sip this summer. Imported by Cynthia Hurley French Wines, LLC

#2 - Di Giovanna Vurría 2021 Nerello Mascalese Rosato

Moving further south of Italy to northern Sicily, this pale pink with a slight orange tint -- Sicilia DOC rosé --outshines some of the top Provençal labels. The wine label’s namesake is from a Sicilian poem, Vurría, translation: to wish for. The grape varietal, Nerello Mascalese, is somewhat similar to a Pinot Noir. Nerello Mascalese is named after its (guesstimated) origins in the Mascali area in Catania. The wine tastes of pomegranate with minerality in a perfect balance and unique taste. It’s also produced with grapes that are certified organic and vegan. Sip without food, or try with shellfish, grilled white fish, pork, or sushi. $18

#3 - Château Mourgues du Grès 2020 Fleur d’Eglantine Rosé

Rosé of Grenache Noir, Mourvédre, and Syrah sourced from the Rhône Valley in France. What more could you ask for? The subtle aromas of peony and roses match its palest of pink color and delicate notes of red fruit. A perfect aperitif or companion to pineapple and grilled pork and veggies. Look for the clear bottle with the etching of Fleur d’Eglantine, priced around $15. Imported by David Bowler

#4 - Feudi di San Gregorio 2021 Visione

From Campania, Italy, this rosé is a stellar example of a summer sip worthy of its $33 price. The grapes to produce this pink stunner are 100% Aglianico – a black grape that originated from Greece. In the southern regions of Italy, it’s considered to be one of the three greatest Italian varietals – in company with Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. This is a wine to be enjoyed with a pizza on the deck with friends, or with shellfish – even aged cheeses.

#5 – Borsao 2021 Garnacha Rosé

Spanish grenache is still as special, if not more so for its ability to be diverse, and this wine is 100% Garnacha that hails from Campo de Borja, Spain. It’s as easy to drink as it is to open (screwcap). Priced around $11 a bottle, it’s a pinkish/salmon sip almost transparent in its hue but able to perform on the palate like a well-balanced wine should. The bouquet is immediate berries and soft flowers, and the taste is citrus mixed with pear and a tiny bit of spice. Pairs well with a summer favorite: fish tacos!

#6 – Mixtrack 2020 Rosé

Inizi Wines collaborated with Mixtrack Wines (Scout & Cellar) in Healdsburg, California to create a sip that speaks to the grape’s roots and rock ‘n’ roll music. Whether producing wine or music, diligence and arduous work are required to gain success. The end result is a connection to others through the passion of a song… or a sip! This vegan Mixtrack blends 60% Cinsault, 30% Grenache, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon for a more robust version of a Provençal rosé. The chorus hits the palate at once with a burst of watermelon and strawberries. Best paired with a burger in the midst of summer. $25

#7 –Dutcher Crossing 2021 Grenache Rosé

Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County produces some of the finest Rhône varietals, and Dutcher Crossing’s Winemakers’ Cellar Rosé is an elegant example of teamwork. Winemaker Nick Briggs and his team were allotted a few vineyard lots and barrels of choice to create this dreamy, creamy rosé with an essence of raspberry, white peaches, and citrus blossoms that proves the mission of Dutcher Crossing: to be mindful of the three “Vs” --staying true to each vintage, vineyard and varietal. This blend from the estate’s Grenache, Cinsault, and Counoise is priced at $38 a bottle -- and worth every penny. Enjoy with hummus and flatbread!

#8 – Les Sarrins Rosé, 2021 Côtes de Provence

Pronounced “Lay Saa-Ruhn,” this pale pink beauty of a bottle with the very pale French blue label holds a vibrant wine that hails from the source where some of the best rosés are produced. The vineyards in Provence are located between the Mediterranean Sea and The Alps. The grapes are a blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Rolle (Vermentino), and Mourvèdre. Sips of this rosé feel like soft rose petals on the palate -- with violets on the finish. Imported by Terlato Wines and priced at $25.

#9 - Acrobat Rosé, 2021

This is a wine to enjoy during a heat wave… unscrew the cap and just add ice, about a dozen strawberries, a dash of sugar and a splash of pineapple juice –mix in a blender for a superior frosé to share with friends while watching the sunset over the ocean. The wine’s flavor on its own exudes fresh cut strawberries with a hint of floral. Make no mistake… this is a bright rosé of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir that offers a palate of fresh strawberries and juicy pears. $15 a bottle.

#10 - Banshee Rosé, 2021

Talk about a massive blend of varietals! This Sonoma County rosé is a blend of 50% Pinot Noir, 32% Sangiovese, 8% Syrah, 5% Black Muscat, 2% Carignan, 2% Muscat, and 1% Zinfandel. Taking the blending even further, where the fruit was sourced from is part of the equation. The blend is 25% Sonoma Valley, 21% Russian River Valley, 18% Knights Valley, 15% Los Carneros-Sonoma, 13% Alexander Valley, 5% Petaluma Gap, and 3% Dry Creek Valley.

Open a bottle of Banshee Rosé to aromas of orange blossom, guava – think creamsicle on a hot summer’s day, and flavors of ripened lemon, minerality, and that creamsicle again. Some of the wine was fermented and aged in neutral oak barrels, which attributes to that creaminess. Wine Enthusiast rated this rosé with 90 points. $28 a bottle.

#11 - JUSTIN Rosé, 2021

Exquisite elegance is the best way to describe the taste of this California rosé. The mostly syrah grapes used to make this amazing summer sip were grown on the Central Coast of California and whole-cluster pressed with minimal skin contact. Its pale pink/salmon color gives way to a softness on the palate and subtle flavors of cherries and strawberries with a finish of melon. Best sipped poolside. $20

#12 – ROSE GOLD Rosé, 2021, Côtes de Provence

Fifty miles Northwest of Saint Tropez, the vineyards of ROSE GOLD produce grapes influenced by the sea, the sun, and those Mediterranean winds. The result… a classic, dry rosé that transports your tastebuds to Provence, where rosés rule. This pink summer sip definitely rules as a preferred choice among friends who gather on a hot summer’s night by the sea to relax and unwind after a long work week. Fresh fruit, minerality, white flowers… perfection. $20

BONUS Review: Dutcher Crossing 2021 Winemakers’ Cellar Riesling, Russian River Valley

Not to add shade to pink, but here’s a white Riesling that pairs perfectly with takeout Chinese food on a warm summer’s day. The crispness and bright flavors of this “off-dry” white begins with aromas of honeysuckle, lemon, and Mike and Ike’s chewy fruit candy. On the palate, a crisp bite of Granny Smith apple proves the power of this California sip. $38
