The Israel Defence Forces received 3 new F-35 multi-role-fighter aircraft, capable of stealth and other 5th generation abilities. No word if any of these were used in the alleged attack, though their stealth abilities may assist in beating the “so called” anti air system known as the S400. Russia is either switching it off constantly, or has lied to their purchasers about its ability. The S400 has not successfully prevented, or attempted to shoot down any of the tomahawk missiles or other drones and aircraft that have intruded into Syrian airspace.
Eyewitnesses in Damascus are reporting massive blasts and fireballs extending into the sky above Damascus International Airport in Syria. Syrian media is blaming the Israeli Air Force for the attack. No deaths or official reports of damage have been released so far.
No official statement has been made by the IDF or Israel’s foreign ministries, though this is not unprecedented… Multiple incidents have occurred in the past few decades between the two opposed nations with neither confirming attacks, successful or not. Al-Mazzeh’s military airbase has also reportedly had ‘explosions’ though this could be rebels, internal sabotage or other unknown actors.
One of the most infamous was the airborne bombing and destruction of a nuclear reactor, which the Assad regime “claimed that nothing existed” until the UN confirmed the presence of isotopes in the rubble that had been bulldozed from the mountain.
It is unlikely for the Israeli Air Force to claim responsibility for this attack, either as it might inflame the already tense situation. The Russian-supplied S-400 Anti Air system failed yet again. Was it disabled by electronic warfare, local saboteurs or ground-troops or other rebel groups? Or is it incapable?
The situation in Syria has been deteriorating daily, Russia is enabling the dictator as he flaunts international laws against chemical warfare and commits war-crimes with impunity. It is clear that Putin is risking a lot; Russia’s reputation has been sullied further as they keep Assad propped up, is this just to keep their warm-water port in Tartous or is it another “war of attrition” to ‘annoy’ the west and draw the allies into more conflict? This is uncertain.
What we are sure of, is that Iran, their terrorist proxy-army Hezbollah and Russia are all colluding in advancing Assad and Putins goals.
Whether that is to defeat ISIS as they claim, or to decimate all opposition to Bashar Assad and his army is also unsure.
The most definite and obvious “win” for Putin is the continued destabilisation of the Middle East, which is a worry for all the compassionate and defenders of human rights. The IDF has intervened many times during the atrocious Syrian “Civil War” as it has been a shocking display of inhumanity. Recently the United States also damaged an airport—though not a civilian and international airport—in a Cruise-Missile strike from two naval destroyers.
