Two Pieces of Advice For Any College Student Hoping to Become an Entrepreneur

Is there something you think could be made better that you can’t stop thinking about?

What is your advice to someone in college (undergrad) who is interested in starting a startup post graduation? originally appeared on Quora, the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world. The 2 biggest pieces of advice I’d share are:

Start with the problem - is there something you think could be made better that you can’t stop thinking about? If so, then try to first build the solution to that problem, see if it works, and more importantly assess whether you enjoyed that process, because starting a company is going to be that process 100x / day. If you love it, go start something yourself and recruit others to join you!

If you don’t have a burning problem/idea you want to pursue, then there are tons of options to join startups out of school:

* Your school career center will have a lot of the big company opportunities (Google, Facebook, most >$1B valued companies).

* If you want to work at other venture backed startups, then go to CB Insights or Crunchbase (or other databases that track private company funding), search for location and stage of company (if pre-Series A, you will be wearing many hats and helping across a variety of roles; if post Series A, you will likely be joining a role in a specific function and so there will be less variability in the nature/type of work), and find ways to connect with the CEO or Head of HR/People/Recruiting at those companies.

* If you can’t find a way in, always, always, always don’t be shy and send a cold email or LinkedIn message or Tweet. You will never know unless you try and the ecosystem is very supportive. Don’t take rejection personally, be persistent and patient, and I promise you will get a response.
