A Sesquicentennial Celebration

The first Walla Walla Frontier Days was first held in 1886. Although it has been known by many names over the years, the event has always been a fair celebration that honors the agricultural heritage of the area. Over the years, the biggest part of the festival has been the PRCA rodeo. The rodeo this year is set to be full of thrilling excitement that cannot be missed.

A Rodeo Thrill Ride

The Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association event starts on September 2 at the Walla Walla Fairgrounds with “Tough Enough to Wear Pink?” night. Rodeo contestants and fans alike are encouraged to wear pink to raise awareness of breast cancer. The night starts with Mutton Bustin’ at 6:45 pm. The Mutton Bustin’ is a nightly event for kids to kick off the rodeo. The adult portion of the rodeo starts at 7:00 pm each night.

The next evening, September 3, is a night that is always one of the highlights of the event, “Rodeo Legends” night. This tradition began in 2008. It is a night to honor the cowboys and cowgirls of the Walla who have best demonstrated the cowboy way of life. These heroes are saluted for blazing a trail of cowboy achievement that future generations will be able to appreciate. This year’s Rodeo Legends are Leland Kelly, Rocky Robbins and Pam Talbot-Thompson.

September 4, the final night of the PRCA rodeo, is “We Salute Our military” night. This night is all about honoring the service and sacrifice our veterans have given us.

Each night of the Walla Walla Frontier Days Rodeo features loads of exciting action, including bareback riding, tie down roping, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, WPRA barrel racing and team roping. This year will also feature a specialty act, John Payne the One-Armed Bandit Company. The roping tricks and horse riding stunts this one-armed cowboy performs have wowed crowds all over the country.
