The industries of mobility and transportation are changing at a pace that has never been experienced, even at the dawn of the automobile. No matter where you look, all towns, cities, and countries are facing unprecedented mobility problems like congestion, smog, access to transportation, and sustainability.

As we attempt to solve these problems, the process of how we approach them must radically shift. Vehicle manufacturers need to let go of inefficient systems that serve the personal consumer of the past and start paying attention to the demands of the ride-sharing consumer of today and tomorrow. I believe the way we produce mobility and transportation products will undergo the most significant transformation by moving away from the mass manufacturing of sedans and light trucks to small-batch, highly customized product development and digital manufacturing focused on mobility experiences.

Additionally, over the next 10 years, innovative mass transit options and micro-mobility (scooters, small vehicles, and more) will become increasingly important, as millions of people flood to urban areas. These modes of transportation can adjust to changing consumer demands more effectively and are better for the planet than ride-hailing or car ownership. I also see air mobility greatly disrupting our lives in the future. My belief is that, just like the cell phone displaced the copper wire line phone, the current road network and ground vehicles are too inefficient to cope with changing demographics and peoples’ needs, meaning transportation will have to leave the ground and look to the sky for innovation.
