Sitting on the gynecologic exam table, especially with both feet in stirrups ranks right up there with the most awkward moments.

With that said, it’s best to write down a list of your questions before you arrive for your gynecological visit. The gynecologist knows what to ask even if you may not. If you don’t blush a couple of times during your visit, your gynecologist is not asking the right questions.

The current recommendation is for girls 13-15 years to see their gynecologist to start to build a relationship to discuss sexually transmitted infection screenings, prevention and other health care advice. You want to develop an open and honest relationship where you feel comfortable to ask questions that may make you squirm in your seat or turn red in the face.

The good news is that your first visit may be a conversation only and/or an external examination to make sure everything is normal with your female parts. A pap smear testing for cervical cancer involves an internal exam and does not start until you are 21 years old. Here are some things you should be asking on your doctor's visits:

1. How often do I need to come in for a pap smear?

2. Can you show me how to do a breast exam?

3. What are my birth control options?

4. Am I a candidate for an IUD?

5. Should I get the HPV vaccination and why is it really important?

6. How often do I need to get tested for sexually transmitted infections (STI’s)? Does my partner need to get tested if this is a new relationship?

7. It is normal if I have never had an orgasm on my own? With a partner?

8. What is the definition of safe sex? How long do I really need my partner to wear a condom for?

9. If my partner is a woman, how do we protect ourselves from STI’s?
