Let's experience the Hong Kong people's original style of life, and taste the delicious food at Tsuen Wan!
Key words: Original Hong Kong life style / delicious food / shopping
All the places mentioned will have Google Map links at the end of this article. All pictures are taken by myself when traveling here. There's also a list.
This is a city built on a bay in the Western New Territories of Hong Kong. Although it’s not in the center of Hong Kong, Tsuen Wan is a popular place with huge shopping malls, different types of food, and beautiful parks. In fact, most people here are residents so you will not see crowded travelers. Instead, you will have an original experience as local people do. There are small restaurants that hide the most delicious food, markets that sell fish and other original raw food, shopping malls, supermarkets, and many more places to enjoy. In this article, I will introduce Tsuen Wan to you, including the hotel, shopping places, and most importantly, I will list the best places here.
Let's focus on different degrees of Tsuen Wan: Food, Hotel, Shopping malls, and special attractions.
Café De Coral (大家楽)
Recommending: BBQ, Double Portion US Grain-fed Beef Hot Pot (only available during winter)
When you come to the cashier, tell them the items you are going to order, and you will get a receipt. Find a seat first and ask one of your friends to take the receipt wait in line to get the food. This restaurant is almost always full because of the delicious food it provides, so you have to be patient. But of course, it’s worth to wait for.
Special Recommendation in Café De Coral
TOP 1 * BBQ item (BBQ Pork/ Plain Chicken, Soya Chicken/ Roast Duck)
(HONG KONG SPECIAL)
Recommending: BBQ Pork (叉燒肉)
BBQ Pork is so unique that it’s one of the most traditional food in Hong Kong.
TOP 2. Hot Pot/ Fish Skin/ Beef Meat
The BBQ will be there all across the year, but other types of food may change according to the season. There’s a secret connection between food and season, and a belief that different food should be During Winter, it’s better to eat some hotspot that can warm you up. So here, you will see hotspot during the cold days.
You can order meat, fish, vegetables as you like, and you’ll add them to the hotspot yourself. In this way, you don’t need to rush.
This restaurant separates food based on the type.
The one placed at the top is usually the most special one. A unique thing for hotspots here in Hong Kong is the fish skin (魚皮), the dumpling, the meatball with mushroom (蘑菇肉丸) in it, and some tofu.
The bowl on the side has some vegetables, fruits, a large piece of tofu, mushrooms, corn, and noodles. It’s recommended that you can eat the noodles in the end after the meat and the vegetables.
And then you will have a table of delicious food.
You can put the food into the pot in the order you love. And you can also choose the flavor of the soup in the hotspot. You can try the mushroom one, the tomato one, or many others.
And during Summer, the food will be different. There are rice and some pancake with meat.
Honeymoon Dessert (#1 in Hong Kong, originated from Hong Kong)
Looking for a place you could chat with your friends, or simply just take a rest after shopping the whole day? Why not come to the honeymoon dessert? It’s a dessert house decorated with a little door in the front.
Instead of getting a cold drink, you can order the Almond Tea with Black Glutinous Rice (芒果白雪黑糯米). Just like the one in the picture.
There are also other styles of food, like the Chinese food, Tai food, Japanese food, Korean Chicken.
Fu Yuan Restaurant (富苑茶餐廳) *Hong Kong special
Right on a small street next to the CityWalk and the raw food market, there are many some shops where local people could grab some food. These restaurants provide original food that local people love, and they won’t be found elsewhere outside the Hong Kong. Although the store is small, it has the most delicious soup, BBQ, and cake. There are always a lot of people in that food stop.
There are three things you have to try:
Find a table first, and then you can see the menu. Or you can order this special food there: 菠蘿包 (Pineapple Bread)，叉燒包 (Steamed BBQ Pork Bun)，以及狀元粥 (Meat Porridge).
The Chinese name of the porridge also has a meaning in China that whoever drinks this will get high academic achievements.
Big Shopping Malls Citywalk, Citywalk2.
There are some big shopping malls in this area. The largest one is the CityWalk. You can buy your favorite sports shirt in the store on the UG level. Or you can buy some skin care products at Sasa, a local cosmetic store similar as Sephora.
Convenient Shops: 7 Eleven
There are also a lot of 7 Eleven stores in Hong Kong, where you can grab your food fast.
Hotels: L' hotel
The one I recommend is the L’ Hotel, and it’s right next to the CityWalk shopping malls. There’s also a raw food store and a convenient store 7 Eleven just in 1-minute’s walk. A subway station is also nearby, and you just need a 3 minute’s walk. There are also some parks next to the hotel.
Transportation: MTR Subway
There are a lot of taxies in Hong Kong, but you have to take note that there are different types of the cab and they can only drive to their designated area. A better way to move around is to take an Uber from your phone.
Tips: Most restaurants will be full of people because they are popular, so you’ll need to wait a few minutes for a seat. But sometimes, when you’re just lucky, someone would just be leaving when you come. The sign for Hong Kong currency is $, but take note that they are not U.S dollars. The hotspot will be about HK$ 70, but it’s only about 10 U.S dollars. You can use your VISA card to pay at Hong Kong, but you couldn’t use your Apple Pay if the currency of your card isn’t HK dollars. One smart idea is to get an Octopus, which is a card that you can use almost everywhere, no matter if you are taking a subway, paying for a dinner, taking a bus. To set up a card, go to the customer service station in any subway stations, and tell them that you want to set up an Octopus card. There should be HK$50 deposits, but you can always get a refund by returning the card. The payment reader is always in the yellow, and all you need to do is touch your card to the reader.
