Variety dropped their bombshell earlier, with some foul details of his abuse of those working with him.
Lauer’s co-host, now host…? Savannah Guthrie announced live that Matt Lauer had been terminated from his long-standing role at NBC over these claims of sexual harassment. Elizabeth Wagmeister and Ramin Setoodeh are still investigating the man and have appealed for any more women to come forward.
A particularly disturbing detail emerged, that in 2006, when his co-host Katie Couric had left he claimed to be “paranoid about tabloid reporters” and had a locking mechanism installed…
Effectively giving him the power to illegally-detain anyone he wanted to, without their knowledge sometimes…
“His office was in a secluded space, and he had a button under his desk that allowed him to lock his door from the inside without getting up.”… “It allowed him to welcome female employees and initiate inappropriate contact while knowing nobody could walk in on him, according to two women who were sexually harassed by Lauer.” — Variety “Matt Lauer Accused of Sexual Harassment by Multiple Women”
The complaints that we have heard so far are gross and we can expect more to come…
• Buying a sex toy as a gift for a colleague, including an explicit note on how he would like her to use it
• Flashing his penis at a visibly shaken employee, admonishing them for not touching it
• Playing F, Marry and Kill constantly at the office with producers and other colleagues
• During the Sochi 2014 coverage, “inappropriate sexual conduct” not-specific
An exchange with the former Fox News anchor Bill O’Reilly becomes much… Darker, or now almost threatening and creepy when he was asking O’Reilly about if he had ever used his phone to make inappropriate or other advances on his victims, from these new revelations today it seems quite disturbing.
“Think about those … women and what they did,” Lauer said to Bill O’Reilly… “They came forward and filed complaints against the biggest star at the network they worked at. Think about how intimidating that must have been. Doesn’t that tell you how strongly they felt about you?” - Matt Lauer
Yet another powerful man who has been protected by multiple, complicit enablers, in the name of money and ratings. How many more will be uncovered as the “me too” campaign snowballs? I hope that any and all sexual predators are shaking in their boots, and that some have the decency to come forward before their victims are forced to go through the awful process of denial, attack by fans and eventual justice for some. But who am I kidding, if you’re one of these sort of abusers you feel invincible and have been enabled by multiple people, for many years and have become accustomed to tolerance of abusive or downright criminal behaviour by their underlings and even management…
May all predators be discovered, inside entertainment and also in the greater corporate, and government too.
