What Are Some True Stereotypes of Silicon Valley?

Just another day in the Valley.

I recently had a very mundane experience that had many of the Silicon Valley stereotypes in it.

I decided to buy the Google Pixel. The main draw was that it has Google Assistant built in, which means I don’t have to rely on just my Google Home to voice control my smart home devices. My current phone at the time, the Nexus 6P, didn’t have that, and opening an app to control your smart bulbs is so 2015. Also IFTTT integration is just so slow.

When the Pixel arrived, I had to sell the 6P. So I naturally went to the coolest place to sell stuff, Facebook Marketplace. After creating the product listing in 5 minutes, I got a response within a few days, just as Facebook’s algorithms had predicted.

The person interested in the item reached out on Messenger. He asked me if I could deliver the phone to a conference he was speaking at in Palo Alto. Now, it is not rare for people to speak at conferences here, but still, I found it interesting and decided to stalk. A quick look at his profile told me that he is a founder and CEO of a small startup. Interesting! So I naturally went where real men go to stalk: Crunchbase. Turns out the startup has millions of users and millions of dollars in funding. Cool! I proceeded to download their app and then remarked on how smooth the animations were.

I couldn’t go to the conference, so I asked him if it was okay for him to pick up the phone from SoMa, where my wife works. He agreed, saying he works in SoMa as well. Of course. So the next day the millionaire founder walked to my wife’s office during lunch to pick up the used phone. I am sure he passed by half a dozen other millionaire founders during his walk.

When the time came to pay, he asked me what I preferred. We discussed Square Cash, Venmo, and Messenger. I thought of PayPal, but what is this, 2015? We settled on Messenger pay. I wished there were some app that could integrate all these services.

Sipping on Blue Bottle coffee, I told my coworkers over Slack about this interaction and how typical of the Valley this is. In response, I heard, “If only there were bitcoins involved” and “If only you had negotiated the price over PiperChat.”

Just another day in the Valley.

Ooh, back to work, my gradle finished syncing.
