One Simple Way to Get More Comfortable With Change

We tend to struggle with change we don’t control.

How can I reframe change to be a good thing? originally appeared on Quora, the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.

Keep in mind that, for most people, some changes are great. Most of all, those changes we opt into: a new relationship, a new job, a new relationship or experience. These are all things we believe will improve our lives.

But we tend to struggle with change we don’t control: The kind of change that blindsides you on a Tuesday afternoon, it goes against your expectations, or it disrupts your plans. These are changes we resist, we fear, and we try to ignore and pretend away.

One of the most common reasons people resist change is because they default to the worst-case scenario. They immediately imagine the worst thing that could happen from this change… and go there. “I didn’t expect this” immediately becomes “This is going to be horrible!” Yet… says who?

One very simple yet very powerful way to reframe change to be a good thing is to (what I call) “flip the script” and ask: “What is the very BEST thing that could possibly happen from this change?” instead. What new things might I discover, or new skills might I learn, or new aha’s might I have? This may sound almost too simple, yet its power is precisely in its simplicity. It can work wonders. Give it a try.
