Final Concert of the Year

Whitko Bands Perform & Bid Farewell to Seniors

Thursday, May 23rd, was the final concert of the year for Whitko's Jr/Sr High bands. Families and friends gathered at the Whitko Auditorium to enjoy an evening of music and triumphs.

Students in the Elementary Band who had only begun playing in the 6th grade this year showed promise. Early in the year, the band performs simple medleys and demonstrates how they warm up for rehearsal, as well as learning the basics of their instrument. But by the end of the year, the students now seasoned, performed three songs: Follow the Leader, Racing the Sun, and Midnight Madness.

Whitko's Jr High Band performed All That Jazz from the musical Chicago and Reflections of Asia, by Todd Phillips. Meanwhile, the High School Band played The Avengers Theme arranged by Michael Brown and the song Cool from West Side Story.

The culmination of the evening and by far instructor John VanPatten's favorite was Bohemian Rhapsody arranged by Paul Murtha, and Rampage by Todd Stalter. The song itself brings to life hints of movie soundtracks that might accompany a super hero themed movie.

Senior Chaz Ault performs percussion while directed by Whitko's John VanPatten.

Senior Bailey Ruckman plays flute directly to the right of VanPatten.

Senior Aneka Paduga plays at Whitko's final concert of the 2018-2019 school year.

Finally, as a time honored tradition, Whitko's Seniors were honored with solos during the quirky The Roosters Lay Eggs in Kansas by John Philip Sousa. This year, the band will graduate three seniors: Bailey Ruckman, Aneka Paduga, and Chaz Ault.

Throughout the program, Van Patten made reference to new uniforms which have arrived this past week. Students and school administrators have each expressed their excitement about the new uniforms as they will bring a new look, comfort, and pride to the bands talented team.

Fundraising began after a 10th place finish at ISSMA (Indiana State School Music Association) competition hosted at Lucas Oil Stadium. Whitko's School Board voted in January unanimously to gift the final dollar amount needed for the uniforms after students had raised well over half of the campaigns funding goal.
