JANUARY, FEBRUARY, MARCH

San Jose – Costa Rica

If your weather at home is chilly, and you’ve reached your limit with the snow, Costa Rica can be your sunny antidote to the winter blues. With San Jose’s architecturally fascinating hotels acting as your hub, set off to explore lush wilderness and sandy beaches during these sunny months.

Valletta – Malta

You may just want Valletta all to yourself – and by exploring during the off-season, you’ll certainly see fewer crowds. Looking for something a little more social? Carnival, held in February, is the perfect opportunity to let your hair down amongst impressive floats, extravagant costumes and a chance to party with the locals.

Busan – South Korea

Japan doesn’t have a monopoly on beautiful cherry blossoms, and Busan is here to prove it. While Mother Nature doesn’t operate on an exact calendar, shoot for a trip in the early Spring for your best chance (think end of March, early April).

APRIL, MAY, JUNE

Brasilia – Brazil

The capital of Brazil, Brasilia is also the “gateway” to the Amazon and Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland. In the late spring you’ll have less rainfall to deal with, giving you ample opportunities to explore the natural beauty that surrounds the city.

Kapaa, Kauai, Hawaii – USA

There might not ever be a bad time to visit Hawaii. But between April and June the weather has dried out and the temperatures start to return to the 80’s, but the summer vacation crowds have yet to arrive. It’s a great time to experience Kauai’s natural beauty and the small town of Kapaa – known for smaller, fun eateries and artisan shops – without the peak-season crowds.

Asuncion – Paraguay

“The Mother of Cities,” Asuncion, is Paraguay’s capital city. A center of music, poetry, arts and architecture, you’ll want to make the most of every second, whether you’re visiting a museum or walking through the historic section of town, taking in the architecture. Visit in Paraguay’s winter months (April to September) for more comfortable temperatures.

JULY, AUGUST, SEPTEMBER

Ishigaki – Japan

Ishigaki is known for its beautiful beaches and as a best-in-class diving and snorkeling spot, so you’ll want weather to match! While it does rain more during these months, they tend to be brief.

Nairobi – Kenya

For the best wildlife viewing, visit Nairobi during the drier months, starting in June and running through October. This is also the busiest time of the year, but for good reason: The weather is more favorable, and you have the chance to see Africa’s “Great Migration”, when millions of animals migrate in search for better grazing ground.

Gdansk – Poland

The summer months offer the most options for a visit to Gdansk. In August, the weather will be warm enough to go for a swim, and St. Dominic’s Fair will bring a new liveliness to the city. But if you’re looking for fewer crowds as you walk about the historic Old Town, September might be a better fit.

OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER

Takayama – Japan

The city of Takayama, located in the more mountainous Hida region, hosts Spring and Autumn festivals that are famous in and outside of Japan. Visit in October to experience the autumnal Hachiman Festival, complete with elaborate floats and Karakuri performances.

Paso Robles, California – USA

In a state famous for its wine-making, Paso Robles on California’s mid-coast is having its moment in the sun. It may not yet have the broader name recognition of Napa Valley or Sonoma, but Paso Robles is quietly turning out fantastic wines. Visit in the autumn for the fall grape harvest to see the vineyards really come alive.

Pokhara – Nepal

Nepal’s Himalayan Mountains offer breathtaking tableaus that must be experienced to be believed. Pokhara offers stunning views away from the bustle of Kathmandu. The winter is a popular time to visit, but in the fall, specifically October, after the monsoon season passes, you’ll have the chance to see Nepal’s lush vegetation come to life, clear views of the Himalayas and more comfortable temperatures.
